Reflection of Light

Concept Explanation

Reflection of Light

Reflection is defined as the process of turning back of light in the same medium on striking the surface of the object. Almost every thing we see around us is due to the reflection of light falling on the objects. Generally, the objects do not have light of their own they are visible only when the light that comes from different sources like sun, light bulbs, fire etc, fall on the surface and is reflected back.

The process of reflection can be explained using the above experiment:

  • When light falls on a smooth surface, a part of it gets reflected as shown in figure.
  • The ray AO is incident on the surface at point O and is then reflected. This ray OA is called as incident ray.
  • After reflection at point O the ray travels the path  OB so it is reflected along OB. This ray OB is called as reflected ray.
  • The line ON is the normal to the surface at O. This means, ON is perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence O and is known as normal.
  • The angle AON that the incident ray makes with the normal is called the angle of incidence, commonly denoted by i.
  • The angle BON that the reflected ray( the ray which get remitted) makes with the normal is called the angle of reflection, commonly denoted by r.
  • Reflection can be of two types:

  • Regular reflection : The light incident on a smooth surface reflected in a single direction is called as regular reflection.
  • Diffuse reflection : When light incident on a rough surface, it reflects in many directions. This is called as diffuse reflection.
